The Journey

Why Do Catholics Believe the Catholic Church Is Apostolic?

Catholics believe the Church did not disappear after the Apostles and need to be recreated centuries later.

The Catholic Church claims historical, doctrinal and sacramental continuity with the Church Christ established through the Apostles.

That is a large claim.

It deserves serious examination.

What Evidence Would Matter?

If the claim were true, we might reasonably expect continuity involving:

  • Apostolic teaching
  • Baptism
  • Eucharistic worship
  • bishops
  • ordination
  • Apostolic succession
  • visible Christian communion
  • authoritative responses to doctrinal disputes
  • missionary continuity
  • sacramental life

No isolated quotation proves the entire case.

The historical argument is cumulative.

What About Eastern Orthodoxy?

This question must not be avoided.

The Orthodox Churches possess ancient Apostolic roots, bishops, sacraments and liturgical traditions.

The Catholic-Orthodox division is therefore a much deeper historical question than the origin of modern Protestant denominations.

A serious CatholicAgain section should eventually devote a full page to:

Peter, Rome, the papacy, the Eastern Churches and the history of the East-West division.

The evidence should be presented openly.

What About Protestant Christianity?

Catholic teaching recognizes real Christian gifts outside full Catholic communion.

Scripture is truly Scripture.

Valid Baptism truly joins a person to Christ.

Faith in Jesus is not imaginary because someone worships outside the Catholic Church.

So the invitation is not:

Nothing you received was Christian.

The more meaningful question is:

Could Christ be inviting you into the fullness of an inheritance you already possess in part?
