Where Did Modern Pentecostalism Come From?

Modern Pentecostalism emerged prominently in the early twentieth century, with important roots in nineteenth-century Holiness and revival movements.

The Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles beginning in 1906 became one of its most influential early centers.

What Did Pentecostalism Emphasize?

Depending on the movement:

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit;
  • spiritual gifts;
  • speaking in tongues;
  • healing;
  • revival;
  • evangelization;
  • expectation of God's immediate action.

Pentecost Is Much Older Than Pentecostalism

This distinction matters.

The Holy Spirit did not appear in 1906.

Pentecost is described in Acts 2.

So the historical question is:

What did the Spirit-filled Church look like between Acts 2 and the twentieth century?

Catholic Christianity claims charismatic gifts and sacramental Church structure are not opposites.

The early historical evidence lets the reader test that claim.
