Walk backward about five centuries and you enter one of the great upheavals of Western Christian history.
The Protestant Reformation.
Do not begin with heroes and villains.
Do not begin with Internet slogans.
Ask something more fundamental:
What Christianity existed immediately before these divisions?
Christianity Was Already Ancient
Martin Luther did not discover Jesus.
John Calvin did not discover Scripture.
The English Reformers did not discover Christian worship.
The Reformers inherited a Christian civilization already more than a millennium old.
Western Christianity included:
- Baptism
- Eucharistic worship
- bishops
- priests
- ancient creeds
- councils
- confession
- monasteries
- saints
- devotion to Mary
- liturgical seasons
- Christian art
- Scripture preserved, copied, proclaimed and interpreted within the Church
The Reformation occurred inside an already ancient Christian world.
Yes, Reform Was Needed
Catholic history should not be sanitized.
Clergy sinned.
Church leaders sometimes failed.
Political power and religious office became entangled.
Abuses existed.
Calls for reform were real.
But an important distinction remains:
The existence of abuse does not by itself settle whether a doctrine is true.
Reforming Christians and redefining Christianity are different historical questions.
Ask a Better Reformation Question
Instead of asking only:
What did the Reformers reject?
also ask:
How old were the beliefs they rejected or reinterpreted?
Were those beliefs late medieval inventions?
Were they present in AD 1000?
AD 500?
AD 200?
That is testable.
Before going farther backward, stop at one symbolic moment.
